I found this error when doing backup on File System Device. The tape engine crashed and "E3855 Unable to position media" was the message. The problem source is the patch QO64863, which contains a new "tapeeng.dll" file. This dll solves the "E3802-Invalid File Header Signature" bug, but generates a new one.
BAB 11.1 SP1 running on Windows 2000 Server (was able to reproduce on 2003 Server)

There was a new device patch posted over the last couple of days - try that and see if it helps.

Yep, right! Patch QO66072 contains a new "tapeeng.dll" module and solves this issue.

Thanks - this was very helpful.

Have been testing backup to disk with ARCserve r.11.1 and kept getting TAPEENG .exe / .dll errors - I hadn't applied QO66072 as CA's description states: "This update adds support for the following devices: -Dell PV136T w/LTO2, -Exabyte 1 x 7 Autoloader" - neither of which I have.

Applying the patch has resolved these errors though. thanks!

Device patches contain updated support AND fixes.

Thanks for this - only now I'm confused about which patches to apply - CA's site gives a list of about 30 patches for ARCserve r.11.1 but the description for a lot of these suggests they are only required if using 64 bit processing or SQL for the database or NAS or MAC etc etc.

Given that the description for QO66072 suggested it was only needed for servers with Dell or Exabyte equipment, I'm now wondering if I need to apply other patches that - from their descriptions - would appear to be inappropriate for my set up... I guess this is one to feed back to CA.

Many thanks for help in any case!
