E3855 trying to backup to HP12000e DAT

With ArcServe 2K, v7, I can format, retension, clean, but when I try to back up I get the E3855 error (unable to position media). Adaptec AHA2940W, WinXP Pro. I tried the SP4 update, then the engine update, no help. Is there a fix for this? This drive worked fine 3 months ago.
