E1 keeps appearing in extra settings on modem connection

I have been having trouble connecting to the 'net and/or once I'm on the 'net my data flow will just stop. Then when I check the extra settings box in advanced modem connections there is E1 there that I did not put there and have no idea how it got there. Every time I can't get connected or data stops flowing after I connect I look in the extra settings box and there is E1 again. Can anyone help me understand this? Thanks
