I would like to add internet e-mail capabilites to my SCO box (5.04)

Does any one know of of an "easy" method for this.

I am thinking of configuring send mail. Any thoughts.

sendmail isn't usually considered an "easy" package to set up. Take a look at /etc/mail/sendmail.cf - the config file for sendmail - and see what you think. I know what I thought the first time I saw it!

Having said that, if you want to put the time and effort in, buy a copy of the O'Reilly "Bat" book. This is the sendmail bible, IMHO.

If you're worried about security, there's not been any major security issues reported in sendmail for quite a while. Most security breaches via sendmail are usually caused by a badly set up configuration file.

Alternatives include Qmail and Postfix. Both work in a similar way - lots of little helper programs that perform a specific task rather than one monolithic binary. The Unique Selling Point they both lay claim to (if you can have a USP for free software :), is that the configuration files are in "plain english". I've been looking at Postfix recently, and it's certainly a lot simpler to see what is going on in a setup file than it is with sendmail.

There may also be other options, but it all depends on how much mail you're going to be transferring, and for how many users, etc, etc. Hope this helps though.
