When I right click the Mcaffe symbol in the sys tray, I click on properties and a window pops up with options. I don't see anything related to my e-mail. Is there a way I can tell if my e-mail is being scanned? I'm using either version 4.0 or 4.5 for corporate user. Thanks in advance.

VS 4.5 can scan exchange/notes and pop3 mails. If this option is activated during installation (default) you should be able to see all scanned files by double clicking the sys tray icon (shield). For pop3 scanning you need to activate download scan, otherwise it doesn't work. The statistic of pop3 scanning is then shown in download scan.

but the on access scanner scans every file added or used by the OS so even though it doesn't say it's scanning email...in a way it is

No

The On Access Scanner will not scan e-mail on your machine because the OAS will not recognize that file format.

You need to activate e-mail scanning to scan e-mail.

Only the e-mail scanning will be able to hand over the e-mail file format to the scanner so it can scan it.

Some more info

OAS will not scan .pst files.
What actually happens when using e-mail scanning is that e-mail scaning uses ODS (On Demand Scan)to get hold of the .pst file within Outlook.

When it comes to attachments e-mail scan uses Outlook to get access to them and hand it over to the AV engine.

Hope this clarifies :)

Thanks for all the info. Sounds like you know it pretty well. How can I determine that I am scanning my email, though. It's been a couple of years since I installed it and probally nothing has changed but how can I tell for sure? Also, if it makes a difference, I'm using Netscape's mail, not outlook. Thanks again for the help.

If you really want to know for sure, just send a test-virus. You should be able to see scanned emails in the status windows (double-click on shield --> download scan (if you are using pop3)). But remember to activate download scan, otherwise you wont see anything.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not sure where to get a test email virus from. I'm disappointed in Mcaffe in that I can't just look at a screen and see if email scanning is activated and how it's configured. I'd like to know this when working on friend's computers.

Hi

E-mail scanning is not on access, you can only trigger it like a on demand scan.

Make sure that you dont have preview enabled in Outlook, that is a security risk.

Every time you feel the need of scanning your new mail you should have 2 buttons in the Outlook bar.
Select and scan.

Hi again

Sorry, missed that you use Netscape mail. Dont think it will work then.
I have never seen any support for anything other than Microsoft Exchange, Outlook and cc:Mail.
