I have a question about the functionality of DNS. I think I know the answer but I need to be sure.

Site - Address in DNS - 1.1.1.1 & 2.2.2.2

So I'm on a host PC. I type into my browser. The DNS query returns.

A. both addresses
B. Whichever address is up in the round robin table

Then my host attempts to connect to the first address (1.1.1.1). Assuming it's up it then caches that IP for and I connect.

In the ensuing period of time host 1.1.1.1 goes down. I attempt to reconnect and my local cache returns an address of 1.1.1.1 which I obviously cannot connect to.

What happens now? Another query and 2.2.2.2 is used, and my cache is updated again, or some other function?

The Windows DNS resolver caches the results of DNS queries including queries that fail to resolve. Each DNS record has a time-to-live value that determines when the record should be refreshed with another query. Until the TTL expires, Windows will respond with the cached query rather than perform a new query.

To check current DNS resolver cache (including TTL value) use "ipconfig /displaydns".
