I would like to know if it is possible to create a single mapping which will be able to read from either XML,Excel or Text.
If not, is it possible to modify informatica's repository and change the file type of the source of the mapping, validate the mapping, session and workflow and then run the workflow?

No, that is not the way to go. What you need is a set of mappings (one for XML,one for Excel, one for text) and then fire off the session that is applicable.

Just modifying the source type in the repository (you are going to lose support then!) is not going to be enough.

If it's a complicated map that you don't want to reproduce 3 times or you are concerned about maintenance, you can make a mapplet out of the main logic and then just tie the source and target to it in the maps.
