Dynamic sort on number

Is there a way to have a report dynamically sort on a number based on a users selection?

When I create a formula for this sort field, the field does not show up in the sort dialog box. Does the sort dialog box only show strings?

It probably is a formula that uses a summary, and you can't sort on a summary.
