I was wondering if it is possible to have my domain controllers point to my PDC dynamically.
Instead of entering the fqdn on all my dc's to point to one domain controller.

Can I just use domain.com and let DNS do the magic?

Has anyone tried this?
Thanks
IC

Are you in a mixed mode environment with NT4? Otherwise there is no PDC. All DCs are peers in Windows 2000.

I hope you find this post helpful.

The PDC is what we use for time synchronization.
We are on a Windows 200 native domain.

The PDC is still around in 2000/2003 and time sync is about all it does.

There is a PDC emulator role which is 1 of 5 FSMO roles, there is not a PDC.

Time synchronization should happen within the domain automatically. If it is not then you probably have an issue with DNS. You should also ensure that you have UDP port 123 open on your firewall for synchronization with the atomic clock.

Mark,

What I am looking for is if I am synchronizing my dc with an external time source. Do i need to setsntp to point to my pdc or can I use my domain name?

You don't have a PDC, you really need to stop referencing servers as such with native 2000 and beyond. There are no PDC's and BDC's, there is a PDC emulator, but that's it and doesn't reference the same thing any longer.

You point your DC at an external time source, and your internal clients will automatically sync with your DC.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.
