A brother-in-law has a working DirecWay DW6000 connected to an Apple Mac. I bought him a DI-524 Wireless Router, to allow connection of 2 other computers in the house. I had limited time, and couldn't get it working. Now, I am remote and need some advice to get it all going.
The Mac was configured with a static IP address 192.168.0.2 (rather than DHCP), though I thought that DirecWay used DHCP for residential hookups.
I copied the Mac's settings for static IP address, Gateway address (192.168.0.1) and DNS servers (?? don't recall) into the D-Link box. I setup the Mac to use DHCP, and plugged it all together. The Mac can talk to the router just fine. A wireless laptop also connected to the router. But I cannot connect out through the satellite.
I tried using the D-Link built-in Ping facility to ping the DNS addresses. That should minimize what could be wrong, since that just tests the connection from Router through satellite to a known server on the DirecWay network. Neither primary nor secondary DNS server responded to ping.
Naturally, restoring original config to the Mac and hooking it up directly to the DW6000 worked just fine. (Though I've seen times when the whole DirecWay system seems to stop working for an hour or more in the past.)
So, by remote control, what can I do? Are there any tricks I missed? Is it possible that the DW6000 is configured for DHCP, and the bro-in-law just got lucky with static assignment of an IP address on the Mac?
I have the same router at home, hooked to Comcast Cable, and it works just fine.
Thanks in advance.
