Hi,

I am running windows 98, and all my hardware seems ok.
I am also trying to run DW 4
When I boot DW4 up, most of it initialises, and the the splash screen comes up, normally everything, until the actual document workspace appears, is drawn.
This then hangs the system, nothing, not even a ctrl+alt+del. I just get error beep, and the system reboots.

Once in a while, DW4 does actually work. So Im not sure what the prob is.
Damn annoying.
I have over 600MB of ram in my machine, and would love to be utilising it.

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
I would be most grateful to anyone who can help.

Whats your virtual swap space like? You maybe out of guts as far as virtual memory goes.
Also- have you tried re-installing DW to make sure it's not a bad install?
How many other aps are you running when you boot up DW, and what are the other specs on your machine? Can you run task manager as you boot up DW and see what happens.

Also- do the obvious, clear cache, defrag, dump rubbish check for viruses, etc.

I used to run DW4 on a 98 box with 64 meg ram and a 333mhz processor- and when mine crapped out, it was because I had no fan on my cpu. (never trust an HP!)

Sometimes, when my code just won't behave, I take it outside and make it listen to britney spears music, and when it comes back it's really well behaved. I wonder if it's suffering from post tramatic stress syndrome now..

Ahh, all very enlightening DarNCaT

My PC has a duron(i know) 800 processor, with 640MBram, an old AWE64 Gold soundcard, and a stealth III S540 graphics card, which Im pretty sure runs on 4x AGP. I have an 7200 ATA 80gig HD and a 6gig ata also.
I have a decent case, fan and my comp has always run pretty smooth
The swap space: Im not 100% sure what this is. I have added a line in my system.ini, conservativeswapfileusage=1
this was done before DW4 install, and I have uninstalled, and reinstalled DW 4 about 3 times now.
Sometimes (im not sure when) DW4 will boot up, but Ive only managed it about twice in the last 20 attempts to get DW4 to load.

Im, not normally running much else. OE, a few IE pages, maybe winamp, and really not much else.
This is why Im puzzled, I have installed the exact same copy of DW4 to this comp in its current setup (every reinstall for the past few years)many times.

I'll go and do what you suggest, and see what happens.

Thanks for the help, Ill let you know what goes on...

I'd also check your drivers (especially graphic ones) and (oh I hate to say this to you) don't run winamp at the same time- it's one thing thats always caused crashes on my machine (dependant on the version of winamp- seems like the newer the version is the worse it behaves)
To check your swap space - my computer, system, advanced, performance- you should be able to get to your virtual memory settings there, I think the largest you can have it set to is 768 blocks, and you can specify how much of your hard disk space you want to devote to swap space- I have 3 partitions and use my system partition as swap space too, so I've got a fair bit, and don't have hang problems these days, on a small virtual memory (the bad old days with a 3gig hard drive) I used to have system hang as it ran out of juice.
I've always had more problems with DW4 than MX (which I now run) but with your specs, you should be able to run it no problem.

alternativly- you could..... trash 98, install 'nix, and run DW via wine *cheesy grin*

K,
I reinstalled my gpx drivers, and I agree about winamp, I still use v2.64, harldy causes a prob.

As for my swapspace. I have an 80 HD, with a 10gig partition whioch has windows & programs on it, the other 70gig is storage and recycle bin...
So, doin a little looking around, I put my swapfile up to max 768 like you say.
Im still having a little confusion surrounding swapfiles, and the settings they should be at for the spec of the machine.

I dont think DW MX will install on W98, I know DW4 better, and to be honest eiother would suffice.

I still havnt managed to successfully boot DW4 since my first post.....system just freezes once everything but the (white) background on the new document....if you know what I mean....

I will keep on trying....and get it soon.

I've gotta say, it's weird as heck that it's hanging like that.
Do you have another computer you can try DW4 on? (even a friends or something) - and maybe try d/l a trial version of mx and see if it will run on your machine. If it won't, then I'd think about doing a system file restore, and see if on your adventures you haven't buggered up some setting or other.
I'm running XP atm, but I have another box with pretty much untouched '98 on it if you want me to double check anything you have altered.

Yea, Ive never known it act like this before.
Ive reinstalled DW4, and I thought it would replace the version on there already. But it has installed seperatley.
So I now have TWO copies of DW4 installed.
The original install still freezes my comp, but the new install runs fine.

Since I last posted I have also set my virtual memory at the values you suggested...So thats the thing thats probably sorted it...however...I still have that unstable install, that wint uninstall, add/remove...!
Anyways., Thanks for all you help and suggestions DarnCat...very help full
Cheers! (",)
