Hi,
I have just bought an Iiyama LCD monitor and will be using it with my Dell Optiplex GX270 (small form chassis). However my Dell only has a VGA port so I have been looking around for a graphics card or an adapter card so I can have a DVI - DVI connection to get the best out of the monitor. However as my Dell is a small form chassis I was struggling to get anything that was the correct size as they all seemed to be normal desktop size. I spoke to a couple of companies (including Dell) and they all said they would call me back with a list of graphics cards or adapters I could use, but no one called me back! I therefore went to my local computer shop and explained the situation to which I was told I should get a DVI to VGA cable and that would work the same as DVI to DVI. I said that I wanted it to be a digital connection so the display would be at its best, to which I got a sigh and was told that VGA is digital and therefore worked the same. I am now completely confused as I thought VGA was analogue and I thought that to get the best out of a monitor you would need a DVI-DVI connection and not a DVI-VGA connection.

Can anyone through me some suggestions please!!

Thanks in advance

Stuart

Your local computer shop gave you bad information. A VGA to DVI adapter cable will supply DVI-A (analog RGB plus sync)to your monitor, so it is nothing more than a plug converter... it will not provide a digital input to your monitor.

You will need a video card that has a DVI-D (digital) output in order to take advantage of your monitor's DVI capability.

Many thanks Frank4d, thats cleared things up. I did think he was telling me false information. If VGA was digital there would surely be no point in having DVI!!
