I have been looking at new Dell laptop that has an HDMI output. I have just found out that this HDMI connection supports only video, and not audio. Is this common? I thought all video only connections were made with a DVI connector.

I would like to understand why Dell would use an HDMI connection for video only. It confuses people like me who expect it to support sound and video.

VGA = Video only
DVI = Video only
HDMI = Video only or Video and audio...

some graphics cards do not have an onboard audio chip...

now why Dell used that port instead of a DVI, I could only guess, and that would be, 1. size and 2. costs...

Bob,
You're exactly right. It is misleading and Dell should be ashamed of offering such an option. I don't care if others in the industry do it or not. It may be cheaper but we're talking pennies on the dollar here. Small desktop cards with HDMI video and sound are selling for as little as $40, so there's no excuse.

What's the model of the laptop you were looking at by the way? I'm just curious.

The laptop I am looking at is the Studio 15.

Interesting new development. I contacted Dell again to see if they had any laptops with an HDMI output that supported both sound and video. They told me that they all support both. The agent looked up my earlier chat session and told me I had been given the wrong information. He apologized for the error.
