Program called Smart Ripper will allow you to copy the dvd files onto your harddrive - its currently at version 2.41.

Then there's a few programs to take the files and encode them into divx files, I use FlaskMpeg v.594 with the Divx3 fast motion codec (seems to work best for me).

Here's a link that might help you out:

if your only doing clips, than flask should be fine. however, if you want to do long movies with length of like 1 and a half hrs and up, then you should use dvd2avi and virtual dub since dvd2avi wud make an avi file and a wav file. flask's compression rate is way too slow, for me i can only around 6 frames per second, while i can get an average of 14 on dvd2avi. i have a 900 athlon w/ 768 sdram. virutal dub wud combines those 2 files for you and compress it too.
