going to post this to the suse support site later, but I thought I would try here first:

I have just installed Suse 8.1 on a pc that has RedHat 8.0 installed on another partition. In Redhat my dvd player works perfectly for playing movies. In Suse I am only able to get video output; there is no sound. I have ogle and mplayer both installed. mplayer gives me an error about being unable to open sound. xmms and other sound applications work fine in my suse installation, so it is something speciffic to dvd sound. I installed the dvd player myself (it's an internal ata/ide). The sound card is an sb live! . I connected the cd sound ports on the sound card and dvd player together (although I have yet to try playing an audio cd, so I don't know if I did that correctly).

Any ideas on what needs to be done to fix the sound for playing DVDs?
