I have a question regarding system requirements for dvd-rw drives. I want to put one in a PIII, 600Mhz, 256mb but I don't know how it will perform or if it will work at all. I was looking at the Pioneer A06 and Sony DRU-510A. It seems that DVD-RW drives vary greatly as far as system requirements are concerned. The Pioneer recommends at least 800Mhz, but today I saw a Lite-On model that only requires a Pentium 166! Will one of these drives work in my machine? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

You may have been looking at both recommended and minimum requirements, which can vary greatly.

The drive should work in a PIII 600MHz, just don't count on being able to do a lot of video editing at decent speeds. Also realize that capturing video to hard drive can take up a lot of hard drive space. If you haven't done so already, consider upgrading your hard drive at the same time. At minimum, you will want at least 40GB free space (but you can easily need more than 80GB) and a 7200RPM ATA/100 drive with 8MB cache.

If you're not too concerned about video authoring, then it'll work fine for now until you decide to upgrade your system, hopefully in the near future. Then you can transfer over the new hard drive and burner. Also don't forget that most burners require Win98SE or later.

Basically, all I want to be able to do is back-ups of DVD movies, not so much video editing. It's running 98SE and a new 40GB hard drive, so it should work fine for what I want to do with it. Thanks for the help.
