Hi board, I am new here. I hope someone can help. I have a HP Pavillion running Win ME that will not play a DVD in a Pioneer DVR-105. The My Computer dialogue box reports the drive as a CD-Rom not DVD-RW. I believe this to be one of the problems. When trying to play a DVD-ROM with WinDVD it reports that no valid drive/disk is found.

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I hate to say this but... the first thing I would do is get rid of Windows ME. I'm being honest when I say that I have never seen anyone have good luck using Win ME. This OS seems to specialize in quirky problems.

Ya I know. It is just a pain in the a** to switch. I thought maybe, just maybe somebody would have a trick or two up their sleeve. Thanks for the help Pyg!!

Most optical drives are seen by Win as just CD ROM drives - that's all that Win supports internally. It is your software like WinDVD or Nero that sees the drive as something else. Assuming the WinDVD you are running is the one that came with your DVD burner (if not, you may need an updated version to recognize the drive), run the drive detection and setup tool within the program. That should do it.
