DVD-rom: reads dvds but not cd-roms of any kind like audio or data

Hi there i need help, I bought a pc and got a dvd-rom with it, i havent used it much but when i did it only reads dvds, when i try audio and data cds the light flashes for a while then stops and i cant access the cds. I can open the tray and have checked the program manager and it says everything is working ok. I have also tried cleaning the discs that i try and using a cd/dvd lens cleaner, and still it doesnt work. I have got it to read them once or twice but now i cant get it to read cds.
Please, any help would be much appreciated.

Oh yea and the dvd-rom is a SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-608 1.4 and when i first had the pc it worked then.
