i have a e-machine that seems to be missing a file that is needed to reconize the dvd rom drive. i've tried every thing I can to correct it, no luck. i've deleted it in device manager and rebooted, i've reset the bios defaults, changed the ide cable, installed a cd-rom drive, nothing has helped. i'm running win 98 on a 466 mhz cpu. when booting up it says that there is a file that is needed to run windows or a windows application, the registry or WIN INI. refers to this file, but the device no longer exists. Has anyone ever run accross this problem, or know about a fix for it ? i've also set the bios to start, recognizing the dvd-rom drive first and tried to boot up with the restore cd in. no luck. thank you!

You may be talking about two different problems here. As far as the first one with your dvd rom drive run Regedit and navigate to the following key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\VXD\IOS

Look in the right hand pane and see if there is any entries labeled NOIDE. If there are delete them and then restart and see if it is recognized now.

The second one about a missing file, you usually get after you uninstall something and it doesn't remove the pointer to it. You can check your win.ini file and see if there is a reference to something you've uninstalled. If not there run Regedit and search for it and remove any reference to it there.
