DVD-ROM Drive reads CDs but not DVDs.

My Pioneer DVD-ROM 114 plays CDs fine, but will not even recognise a DVD.
When I first found this problem (I don’t play many dvds om my computer) my first thought was to update the driver, but having done this there was no change.
I then reinstalled my player software (softDVD3) but this keeps throwing up the error “DVD drive not ready, or drive empty”

Any help on this would be appreciated.

have you tried different dvd disks?

I have had a thought. A couple of months ago i had a worm that searched for files of a similar size to itself and replicated itself in those files. I cleared them all out and reinstalled the software concerned, but must have missed the zoran softdvd player. I have now reinstalled it, but have just found that it is set to zone 1. I am in zone 2 (england) so my DVDs wont work.
However, i have a zone 1 DVD of "Blade Runner" sent to me by a friend in the US, I watched it on a friends M/c that had been switched to play zone 1, Anyway...that wont play either, so im assuming its some kind of hardware prob.

If anyone has any other ideas, please get back to me.

The worm was called "KLEZ.H" It infiltrated over a dozen files before i was allerted to it.

How was it removed?
That is a nasty one...
