When I put a dvd into my drive my computer restarts. I have changed dvd's, types of dvd's, burning software and drives as well as a motherboard and reloaded winXP. I can work around it when I burn a dvd by waiting for the program to ask me to insert a dvd. I do not get a BSOD when this happens, so I do not have any code to go by. I thought it may be an IRQ conflict, but I have not been able to verify this. Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this?
Thanks for your help.

Have you tried a different power supply? Borrow one from another PC if possible and try that....

Have you tried just putting a HD on it to see if the does the reboot, then it's the PS.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

Thanks for the suggestions. My power supply went up and ruined my MOBO, which is why I changed my MOBO. I failed to mention that I upgraded my power supply at that time.

I log into safe mode to use my dvd drive and I haven't had any problems with it, yet. I will describe this in more detail and what I have done below.

Desktop:
MOBO - ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe (new)
Mem - G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 2 DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel (new)
CPU - AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 5600+ ( 1 year old)
PS - Antec® EarthWatts 500-Watt ATX12V 2.2 Power Supply (new)
DVD Drives - LG SATA (new) and older BENQ IDE (3 years old)

Issue:
When I put any type of DVD into my Disk Drive my computer will automatically reboot.

Failed attempts to fix:
Removed NERO, Reg clean, full AV scan, Spyware removal
Reinstalled - WinXP, DVD drivers
Replaced Power Supply, Memory, MOBO and DVD Burner

Thanks again for any suggestions.

The only thing that has stayed the same, it seems, is the CPU & case. Hey, what have you got to lose? Remove the MB from the case, and lay it out on a towel or other insulating surface. Connect the minimum components so none is touching. See if it still happens.

In my mind, one of the possibilities is the physical act of opening & closing the drive. Maybe it's momentarily shorting something. I guess you could achieve the same results by giving the case a *tap* in the area of the DVD drive while it's running.

Maybe the "reset" button is shorting out, or the "PWR" button has loose contacts. Go around these by shorting across the "PWR" header momentarily with a flat-blade screwdriver, while the board is out of the case.

That is a great idea, I wish I would have thought of that when I was replacing everything. I think that since it doesn't happen when I am booted in safe mode that it "shouldn't" be a physical problem. I am going to see what others may suggest before I try that, besides if my wife sees that computer disassembled again.... Thanks again for your suggestion.

If it works in Safe Mode, then I would see which program starts when you place a DVD in the drive. I would disable Autoplay just in case. There is a setting in the free tool TweakUI to disable Autoplay...give that a try first.

Thanks Tony, I will try to disable the AutoPlay, should I use taks manager to see what program opens when the dvd is inserted?

There will only be a program running when you insert a DVD if you have selected one as Autoplay Default at some time in the past. If not, it would just be the Autoplay utility running.

There is a possibility that when the PSU went southside, that it corrupted some system files...

run CHKDSK /F C: from a CLI (DOS box) first, to check for errors on the HDD...

Then run SFC /SCANNOW, to have the systemfiles checked for corruption... (have the XP cd ready if it asks for it)...
