I had my mac G4 powerbook set to region 1 but tried to set drive region back to region 2 , it displays ERROR CODE 70001 and it ejects the disk...anyone help!!!

DVD Player encountered a system error. Could not detect a valid media file (-70001)

... as far as I am aware the DVD drives only allow a few plays of films then they set themseves irreversibly to the region of the last disk played (maybe the 5th for example)

Kind Regards
Duncan

You could always try to update the firmware for the drive, but you risk killing the drive entirely. There is a reason why DVD drives are limited to regions. consumers are not supposed to be jumping between regions.

Region settings on drives are a pain and usually have both a hardware and a software element; the first being Region Playback Control (RPC) and on almost all Apples is RPC-2.

as jimoblak points out, there are some utilities to update the firmware (hence overcoming the hardware element), but IIRC, you need to have a mac that can boot into OS 9 to run the updater. I think xlr8yourmac.com have a link on their f.a.q. to the relevant sites

You can then use a utility like RegionX to deal with the software element.
