Trying to do what I think should be trivial, either I'm a shmuck, LE won't do it, or both. I just want to take my Digital8 Camcorder and create a DVD from it. Nothing special.

1) I've got some experience with Premiere LE, and have created .mov files in the past with no worries. I know I need the mpeg plugin to create those files, is that the only thing I'm missing? Does anyone know if I can even put the mpeg plugin on LE? I have a VAIO, and it came with DVGAte, Click to DVD, and PowerDVD - does that help me?

2) Is my filesize right? It seems awful big - I'm doing about 13GB/hour of uncompressed AVI. I presume mpeg codecs will drop this to the <4.7GB limit of DVD.

3) I haven't used LE in something like 8 months, but last time I did it I swear I thought I got it to recognize different "scenes" when I was capturing from my camcorder. It put each different scene in a different clip. Now I cannot remember nor find how to do this, and I've tried re-running the capture to no avail. Was i on drugs, or is there something I need to do in LE to auto-carve up my 1 hour capture into the 10 or so different chunks I recorded it in?

4) All I ever do is real simple movies, maybe a title, interim banner scenes separating shots, and end credits. Is there any real need for me to pay $700 for the full deal - i.e., is there something I'm missing?

TIA

Well, your problem is that you have an LE version. I'd dump it and get Pinnacles' Studio 8 ( ). You can export MPEG files straight from the program and it will author your DVD within the program

If you want a more technical way to do what you want, but no pay the price of a full version of premiere, look into Uleads alternative Media Studio Pro and their DVD Movie Factory 2 ( )

Uncompressed avi/uncompressed audio = 10 megs per second.
Depending on your capturing devices/codec, that will determine the file size.

I found that a 45-60 min MPEG 2 ( DVD mpeg ) is about 4.0 GB. Depending on my settings for the mpeg 2 stream.

What is your capturing device? As far as I know, Premiere in all versions do not detect scenes. Could be your software that you are capturing from.

No , there are alternatives, but for home movie making, for DVD, expect to spend about $700 on everything; capture card, programs etc. Ulead's Media Studio Pro is a good alternative to Premiere and pretty much is layed out the same way. It also has a "conversion" feature; to convert an existing avi to any other file format you want. Not available in premiere without setting up a project then dropping it onto a timeline and rendering it out.

Ulead's DVD Movie Factory can author your DVD's
And there are other freeware/shareware/commercial DVD authoring programs out there. You'll just have to do your research.

Pinnacle DVD Express is another authoring program.
