Alright, final question, maybe... But this place is OH SO HELPFUL! I haven't been played with Linux since 2.4.16 was out, and there's been a lot of changes since then. (YAY!) Anyway, I've got a DVD burner, which is an excellent contraption. I used to use mplayer but I can't get the sucker (or xine) to work (I will deal with that). DVD-burning, however, is a big priority to me. Apparently, scsi emulation on a cd-rom isn't neccessary anymore for cd writing, but how 'bout DVD? How can I tell if DMA is enabled (it needs to be...), and what does my kernel config need to look like in order to get this burning at a decent rate? I have Debian on an Inspiron 6000, and haven't been able to find any decent information on it. I paid for a DVD-burner, I want a freakin' DVD burner! --)

As of 2.6 kernel, you do not need SCSI emulation anymore. To burn DVDs, you'll need the mkisofs prog from the cdrtools package and the growisofs package.

K3B is a good GUI package to burn cds and dvds. As for watching dvds, I think you need libdvdread. I believe that's all.
