The first issue just cropped up.

After Installing Windows 8 Developers Preview on my Test machine, the LG DVD-Ram drive used to perform the installation is no longer recognized by Windows.

Bios Picks it up correctly. Windows XP which is also installed on this computer also picks it up correctly.

Windows 8.... nothing, nada, zip, not even an exclamation point in device manager, it just does not show up.

I've even booted into Mandriva using it and it works fine, so I'm at a loss. I'll be trying a different drive see if that works next.

Any and all ideas welcome.

Oh and I did try the upper and lower limits solution but since its not picked up, there are no such entries in the registry.

I installed 8 on a single formatted drive on one of my test machines & it sees both of my dvd-rw sata drives. Bios shows both upper and lower filters.

Did you try a different drive? what were the results?

Unsurprisingly the IDEdiag picked up nothing. Not even the Primary master from which I'm booting, and Windows is running off of.

Tried a different DVD drive this time a Sony drive, the other one is an LG, and still the Bios picks it up and correctly identifies it, but Windows does not.
And yes Windows was installed on a single un-partitioned drive, no dual booting or anything. However this machine did have a pre-existing HD which I kept intact, though disconnected through installation.

If I use that one to boot into Windows Xp, the drive shows up fine, and can be used.

Just out of curiousity I installed 8 on another system again with a formatted hard drive & all is good, and this machine is no spring chicken. I was not sure Windows would even install but it did without a hitch.

Might try to reinstall & see what happens, it takes so little time.

Having messed about with Windows 8 CP for awhile now, it seems that removable media devices just hide, thoroughly, if there is no readable media mounted on them. This goes for USB drives, CD/DVD drives, Virtual Hard Disks, Virtual CD/DVD etc.

The facility that Windows 8 can now mount VHD and ISO files etc., natively, just by double clicking on them or adding a shortcut to them in the startup folder, makes Windows 8 wonderfully adaptable, but I'm sure that the developers know that every one of the 26 drive letters in Windows is more precious than ever - and therefore if there is no data, then Windows 8 won't waste the drive letter.

Put some media in the DVD drive, and see if it appears!

For all the tests the Windows installation media was in the drive, and it never showed up, I did even insert other discs in it and it would still not be recognized.

However since then, I frankensteined an external DVD drive out of an old usb HD caddy and the LG drive mentioned previously and it can be successfully used. I've even ripped a CD using the device.

However you may be right about the hiding, though that's a little annoying.
