DVD burner Turned CD Rom 1

I'm having issues with my DVD burner that I've never seen before. When inserting a DVD-R to burn files onto, the DVD burner becomes a CD-ROM right before my eyes and says it cannot burn the media.

Good chance your drive lost the DVD capability. We have a couple of them here that only read, no more writing.

I've never known a drive to do such a thing but I haven't been in this industry for too long so I don't doubt it.

Find out the exact make/model of the drive, download and install the latest firmware (available from the manufacturers website) usually this entails installing a small utility to recognise and upgrade the version (this software will be free to download as well)

I've actually had a CD rom drive quit on me in the middle of being used - that brings reality into a new perspective...
