I just got my replacement DVD burner, and the thing just kills my CPU usage. This is the same model as my last one that burned out, but the last one eventually started doing this as well. When I burn a DVD, it takes my CPU Usage to 96% and higher. Can't do a darn thing while it's doing it's business. When I first got it though, it cooked through the thing in about twenty minutes. Now one DVD is a three hour production. What happened? How do I fix it?

what are the specs for the computer and burner???
what type IDE cable are you using to the burner?

check your DMA settings in the Device manager in windows

It's an AMD 2200+, 768mb RAM, the burner is a 16x NEC 3520. As I said, I'm really confused because this happened suddenly. The burner used to run like a champ, now it wouldn't stand up to a slug in a race. What am I looking for in the DMA settings?

Oh, and it's just the basic IDE cable that comes with them.

DMA is selected if available, not PIO. What else could this be??

A Windows issue?

You said it worked before with the previous burner for a while, and before it died, it started doing the same thing. That right there screams "Windows" to me!

Clean up as much as you can using Spyware/Adware removers, registry cleaners (like Registry Mechanic), and kill as much as you can from msconfig -> startup tab.

I've always used AdAware and SystemWorks to clean up spyware, adware and registry problems. And I have nothing checked on MSCONFIG startup... :(

OK then, what exactly, is taking up 96%? List the processes that are using the CPU, and the percentage.

Also, I would strongly recommend you throw a spare hard drive in the system as a test and load Windows on it (clean install). Or try the drive in another PC. This will help you rule out whether the problem is hardware or software related. At this point, I'm still betting it's software.

Don't have an extra harddrive or the cash to get one. The only thing running at the time this happens is DVD Shrink. And as I said, this only started at about the halfway point of life on the first burner. Used to run like a champ, now it's a chump.

That wasn't the only suggestion.

Also, CD/DVD burners don't just become slower over time. The operating system, on the other hand, can. This is even more evident in your case because the "replacement" drive had the same problem right from the very beginning.

Without formatting your hard drive, you've already tried most of what there is to do to clean up Windows. Try uninstalling/rebooting/reinstalling your DVD authoring software as kalesh suggested. Then if that doesn't help, I would suggest using the software (Nero or Roxio) that came with the burner as a test. After that, formatting may be the only attractive option left!
