I just inherited an MIS department. Prior to me getting here, they had purchased a MAC G4 for the purpose of backing up our NT server (Don't ask..) and Windows workstations. This is to be done using the DVD.

At first I scoffed, but it might work.

My question is, what is the capacity of a read/write CD Rom. I think it's 4.7 Gig, correct ???

Anyone ever used anything other than a tape drive ???

Don't remember the capacity of DVD off the top of my head but my experience with non-tape drives has always been that they are slow. This, of course, depends on the throughput of the network and device hardware. I also don't remember what the average write speed of a DVD is, either.

The advantage to using DVD/CD is they are not as prone to enviromental issues (e.g., magnetic fields, temperature, etc.) that tapes are.
