Both the dvd and cd rom drives have stopped working for some reason. I have windows xp home edition system. The drives have power, and the data cables are properly conected ( I tested the cables, they work fine). When I check in device manager, the drives an exclamation marks beside them and in the status area, windows says " the drivers for the device have been loaded, but windows is unable to find the hardware ". I have tried all I know and I have run out of solutions; please help.

kumbwi,
What have you tried? Here's what I would do:

1) Remove both from Device Manager and reboot. Both should get reinstalled automatically.

2) Verify that the jumper settings haven't been changed. One should be the master while the other slave (or both can be set to cable select which is not generally recommended).

3) If the above doesn't work, remove from device manager again, power down the PC, disconnect both drives and reboot. Verify that nothing else in Device Manager has an exclamation point. If not, then power off again and reattach one of the drives. Do the same for the other if the first one shows up in Windows.

4) Move one of the drives over to the primary and leave the other disconnected. See if you can get one to work by itself.

I agree with that, too.....but make sure(and Im not entirely clear why) that the drive set to "master" is at the top of the cable.....Ive had weird problems in the other config.
A good chipset driver update from INTEL.COM couldnt hurt either(if running an intl chipset)

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.

I step 1 through 4 recomended by cdogg and i am still getting the same results; the master drive is at the top of the cable. This is something that was working fine with the current connections, so I do not think it is a connection issue. I dont get it.

Use a Win98 boot disk to start your system. Select "with CDROM support". Test to make sure you can access a CDROM drive from the DOS prompt with a simple command like dir.

I have similar problems in XP pro. Every so often the DVD and CD burners will dissapear. Rebooted and checked the Cmoss, found that the drives did not show up. Use automatic recognition and they appear again. Then boot up and the drives are back in XP. There are no viruses or worms on this machine. Also never have the problems in Sun Solaris or in Win98se. I use here a tripple boot system. The reason for this strange behavior escapes my knowledge. The funny thing is that it only happens in Xp. Regards
