I just got a Duron 800 on a Gigabyte GA-7zx.
When i run some games like Indiana Jones Infernal Machine, Roadwars ,Edgar toronteras MotoX,Superbikes 2000 , POP3D etc. when it comes to 3d i get a jumpy screen with flashing frames from different ancles or the system freezes. In some games when put a CD in the drive they crash to desktop. Rest of the system is Voodoo 3000 Agp 64Mb Sdram133.i 'v tried all directx versions from 6 to 8 reinstalled Windows 98 12 times, removed modem and sound card, replase the Voodoo with a Viper 330 PCI ,tried the latest VIA 4 in 1 4.25 drivers but 0.
My system: Windows 98, 64 Mb SDRAM 133 ATX power supply 250W.
System temperature 38C
CPU temperature 44C
Voltage
Vcore 1.67
Vdd 0.27
Vcc 3.41
+5.000V 5.13
+12.000V 12.60
measured with Via Harware Monitor
The VHM at 0.27 indicates error but i dont know what it means and how can i fix it.
I guess its hardware problem but then why 70% of the games and even 3DMark200 and all applications run fine? Please can you help me? Thanks.

HEY! I just got a Duron-800 also, except I chose the best motherboard for SocketA (Asus K7V)

anyways....

I Can recomend 2 things:

you might wana try a 300Watt power supply
OR...
get better cooling for your chip, I dont know about you, but 44C seems a bit toasty, you sure you didnt get a Duron 600 that was advertized as an 800 and set as one? (I've seen some companies take lower speed chips, overclock them so they could make more $$)

When I get home I'll put some more thought into this.

Well i think 44 must be ok since the warning limit of VHM is 50C and also i get the same problems whith the case open and 39C.I tried with another power supply(220W)! and i get the same numbers...Is it original 800? I dont know but it looks like a long shot.Im very confussed. Is it the cpu the mobo or something relating to Windows? Its very strange to work perfect writing CD's , browsing , playing mp3's and all the rest but crashing on games!I even tried it with another SDRAM chip but nothing changed. Thanks for the help i hope you can come with some more ideas.

220 is way too low , in any case there is a limit, going lower won't nessarily decrease the performance, also 50C is the limit set at the point that your CPU must shut it self off to avoid burnout, getting even close to that number would result in instability but not a burnout. That is why I mentioned it.

I have been told by an AMD rep that there is a problem with the chipsets and video. A lot of Microns that come with the Duron are having video problems. The rep said its a bad chipset but I don't know any other details.

um, I thought it uses a KT133 which has performed perfectly for most boards (AMD has their own Chipset btw, which is one reason why they might put down VIA) if anything it's a problem with the board, powersupply or cooling, not to be chipset related (provided you did download the latest Via 4-in-1 driver)

Hey Karl,
Are you sure you didn't get an ASUS A7V?
Or did you jam the duron in the slot? (K7V is SlotA)
Just Curious....

I'm running the Athlon 950 t-bird in the ABIT KT7-RAID
I gave up on the Asus, Boots waaaaaaaaay too slow!

I'm up in WinME in 8.7 seconds.
(Win98 SE still takes 18-22 seconds)Dual boot

As far as the thread is concerned, I agree on all the possibilites you suggested.
Less than 250W p/s can be unreliable. 300W is recommended.
39C is HOT! My athlon 950 Oc'd @ 1050 runs at 33C
Either the Heatsink is really, really poor, Or it is a clocked chip.
See if you can get into the BIOS and clock it back to 600 or so, Maybe it will stabilize. Or get a monster heatsink/fan combo, Can't hurt.
(I've got this thing shaped like a donut with a fan in the middle, Incredible.)
You can get good ones for around $20, maybe more if thru a reseller ($35)

Start with the clocking, That would account for the instability and the heat your experiencing.

Good Luck,
Timothy Cox
when all else fails...........FDISK! ;)

No I have an Duron 800 (SocketA) Asus K7V (SocketA) From monarchcomputer.com for 262$ (they still have the AMD combo sales going) and since they are a chain OEM they dont sell Slot A anymore, I used to have a Athlon 'Classic' 750 which died, which is why I replaced it with a Duron + new Motherboard, since I Figured the market is headed in the socketed direction (and could easily upgrade to one of the TBirds once the prices droped to make room for the upcomming SledgeHammer)

K7V isnt slotA it's SocketA

Although here is the funny thing

both their Socket and Slot A Motherboards are called K7V, you refer the difference by saying either KT133 or KX133.

8 out of 10 reviews, has given the Asus K7V KT133 (not onboard Audio) a 10/10 ratting, it's mentioned perfect for stability and the overclockability (if you have an unlocked chip) take a look over at socketa.com

also you sure you didnt get the K7V without the ATA/100 support etc. they had 3 different versions of K7V (Pro, KM, and the one with no name) one of which was slower than the rest.
