I'm using CR8.5

I have the following fields:
SurgeryDate = June 1, 2004
PatientName = John Doe
Procedure = Hip Replacement
NurseName = Frank Robinson
NurseName = Casey Stengel

When there is more than one nurse name documented for a the case (the nurses sometimes "relieve" one aonther), I am getting duplicative (or triplicative, etc,) records for such cases; depending upon the number of Nurses on the case. I would like to do away with those duplicative records.

The report is showing the Nurses Names under one another on the report, for each record (which is fine). But, the records duplicate (or triplicate, etc), it seems, due to the number of nurses that worked on the case.

Do I need to do some grouping formula to prevent this ?
A subreport ? Another way of linking things?

Assuming you have a unique id field (?procedureid?) then you can group on this field.
Then move all the fields from the detail line into the group header. Suppress the detail line.
I wouldn't like to predict which nurse name you will get from the two or three involved in the procedure but you will only get one.

If you still need to see all the nurses name listed without getting duplicate detail lines, you can remove NurseName from detail line. Insert a small subreport into the detail line that contains NurseName. Then link the subreport to the main report by a unique id field (?procedureid?). You should get one detail line and then the subreport will list all nurses involved in the procedure.

SurgeryDate PatientName Procedure NurseName
June 1, 2004 John Doe Hip Replacement Frank Robinson
Casey Stengel
