duplication of contacts and calander events

After syncronizing my Outlook 2002 with my Palm V, all appointments and contacts got duplicated. This seems to be happening to many people in my building, any body know any steps to prevent this? Should the outlook be wiped clean and the PDA import all data? before you start a sync.
