duplicating movie clips

I have created quite a complicated movie clip (composed of about 60 clips within each other) to reside within a single scene. I would like to be able to duplicate this clip and then modify it (content, paths, etc)for different instances so that I may have several clips all which work in a similar manner, but are different. When I try dragging another instance onto the screen and modifying it, it changes the other instance. Same thing when I tried duplicating the symbol in the library. I am really in a bind here, can anybody help??? please???

i was not aware that if you were to drag an instace of the MC onto the stage from the library and changed that instance, that it would effect the origional one. i feel sure that anything taken from the library is just an instance of the real one, or is that .....no because all the symbols including buttons and graphic never changed for me except that instance. i will need to tag this one, sorry couldnt help....

Simple things can be changed like color and transparency, but if scripting gets changed it is changing the script in the original symbol as well. The only way I can seem to do it is to duplicate a MC as well as all of the MCs nested within that particular clip and rename them all. Since I am planning on having 42 (so far) MCs with 8 clips nested within each, this thing is never going to load...
