We originally had one master replica and three read/write replicas of a particular partition. One day, seemingly out of the blue, one of our read/write replicas has become a second master.
Are there any ideas on what may have caused this? Are there any concerns that should be taken into account before getting rid of one of the master replicas?
I'd greatly appreciate any help you can give me.

An earlier post menioned to designate a new master, that will definately work for you. The only time Ihave ever seen two masters come up is when a server was brought up in stand alone mode and designated as a master then restarted and it was originally a R/W. That should solve it. When complete, I would recommend you do a couple of dstraces on the servers that hold replicas to look for errors. From there, I would perform a local repair on EVERY server in the NDS tree.

DSREPAIR -A
Advanced OPtions Menu
Repair Local Database
Make sure all default options are selected and include the option to rebuild the operational schema
RUn this until no errors are reported.

If you still experience problems, then the next step would be to open an incident with Novell.
