We originally had one master replica and three read/write replicas of a particular partition. One day, seemingly out of the blue, one of our read/write replicas has become a second master.
Are there any ideas on what may have caused this? Are there any concerns that should be taken into account before getting rid of one of the master replicas?
I'd greatly appreciate any help you can give me.

You will need to go to support.novell.com and find TID's on checking for inconsistant rings. If your nds is not massive or is working OK apart from this master problem, I would -
1. Make sure both servers can see each other.
2. If they can on the one you want to be master,
a. Load dsrepair -a
b. Advanced options
c. Replica and Partition ops
d. Select problem partition
e. Designate this server as new master.

Sounds like you have a ds problem which I would prob advise getting someone in to deal with. There can be alot of underlying problems that aren't easy to find so you will not be able to report on tek-tips all relevant info.
