Hi! I have a little idea on networking.. and

I have a problem regarding IP address and computer names. Last time I setup a computer named rphdlv01 with ip address 10.35.1.65 to our local network. Then, I want to change computer name to rphdv02 and ip address to 10.35.1.165. So edit the ip address, but i cannot edit computer name. I tried ping, and the following were the result.

C:\>ping -a 10.35.1.165

Why does the 2 computer names has only one ip address asigned? Will someone please consider my problem and help.

rphdv02 and rphdv02.RASP.ROHM are the same computer.
Why can you not edit the computername on rphdlv01 ? If the solution is here, let us know it was helpful so others can benefit from it as too

When I tried edit computer name to rphdv02, error message displays "The account already exists."

If on my ping result, both rphdv and rphdlv have the same ip address.

che965088,

You probably just need to delete the old Host record in DNS.

If you can ping it, it exists, choose another name. If the solution is here, let us know it was helpful so others can benefit from it as too

"The account already exists."

It's saying that the machine name already exists in the domain. Try checking the domain listing of machine names and removing that one. Resync the domain then, or wait several minutes (if you have multiple servers). Then give it another shot.

As for pinging different names and getting the same IP address you have multiple records like was mentioned above. You could have 100 names pointing to one address, but the machine that is really responding is only one machine that happens to have that address.
