Running Netbackup 4.5

If I write to a tape '000001' then I move the tape offsite. I then put in a new tape '000001', what will Netbackup do? Any thoughts or answers?

Will it write to this tape? Will it ignore the tape?

Thanks

Bob,

I think you answered this on another site.

you said it will cause an error. What causes the error? Because, people here said they thought it would see the tape in the drive again, and think it could just keep backing data up on it as long as its not full.

But I think the error comes from the header thats on that tape will be different then the header it remembers. When does it write the header, when you do inventory? Then it tries to write a header, but realizes it has this barcode already? Just trying to clear things up. Thanks again.

You are correct.
NetBackup will write a physical header on a tape when it first uses the media. It will from then on just read the existing header each time the tape is mounted and compare it to what it believes should be on the tape. If it doesn't match then it will freeze the tape.

Just because the Veritas documentation states a certain thing does not make it a fact

you need to be doing an inventory every single time a tape is changed in or out of the robot as a matter of course.
As for having duplicate tapes, intentionally or otherwise, is very bad...
