Duplexer jams only when page is blank

We have an HP Laserjet 4Si. It prints double sided without a problem as long as there is print on both sides of the page. However if we send a one page document, it always gets stuck somewhere in the paper path, usually near the duplexer. We thought this was a hardware problem, maybe with the rollers, but why would it work when there is print on both sides? Could that be the printer driver?
Any comments would be much appreciated.

Print out the config at the printer. What is the setting of
the Mopier(duplexer) ?
Now check the printer config on the pc.
What is the setting for Mopier(duplexer) ?
Single sided printed should not have the duplexer enabled.
The duplexer should only enable when duplex printing is occurring.

Looking at the "test menu" printouts:
The self test page shows:
"installed options: duplex unit"
The P.S. config. page shows: "Duplex: Off".
(We manually turned off duplex, but it still prints duplex if the printer settings in MS Word, etc, say "double sided".)
That's pretty much all I could find on the test menu.

Does the problem crop ur if paper is fed from any installed
tray ?

Actually today the printer seems to working without any problems. This morning there was a paper jam, and they reversed the paper in the tray, that seemed to fix it! We will keep an eye on it.
Interestingly, the duplexer is configured to "duplexer =off", on the printer, but MS Word over-rides that setting if you click to enable double sided.
There is a second paper tray (legal size) underneath the main one. We haven't tried using it, but that may be an option, especially if we can re-configure it for standard size paper.
