Hi,

I added a new hard drive, not that this should matter, but now I am getting a segmentation error when running dump. Is there a log file somewhere that I can get an idea of what is wrong. There are no exit codes when running dump. I should add that I was screwing around in my /var directory moving files as I add my new disk (var was at 100 per cent).

Any ideas,

Thank you

Hi,

Does it run ok with '/sbin/dump -W' ? Could you have set the dump code (5th field) wrong for something in /etc/fstab when you added the drive ? Is dump itself ok (rpm -V dump). You can always run dump with strace for more info :

strace /sbin/dump -W

I'm not sure why deleting stuff in /var would make a difference but, if you are using a rpm based distro you can search for missing files by doing a 'verify' on all packages and filtering the output with grep - i.e.

rpm -Va | grep /var | grep missing

If you leave off the 'grep missing' bit, the output contains flags that indicate where something has changed :

5 MD5 sum

S File size

L Symlink

T Mtime

D Device

U User

G Group

M Mode (includes permissions and file type)

if a file is completely missing it just says 'missing' with none of the flags.

(Warning - it takes a fair time !)

Hope this helps
