Hi again:

I got some "Dummy Drivers" for E1, T1, LM2000, ATM, etc. for my laptop with Sniffer Pro 4.7, if you install them, you could create agents with Frame Relay, HDLC, etc. encapsulations without the adapters ( Snifferbook, LM2000, etc. ). Do you know how can I install them ? I've tried with the instructions provided but it doesn't seem to work. Instructions only say that some dll's should be placed on acertain directory, and adapters must be setup by normal procedures ( Control panel/ Add/remove hardware... ) but no results at all.

Thanks all in advance !

I'm not sure your case but I just tested Dummy Drivers with Sniffer Pro 4.5. If I'm correct, it supports only Win98 and NT.
So if your dummy driver supports W2K, please give me too. Thanks.

I ran into the same problem on Windows XP. I've heard from my local NAI SE that it only works with pre-win 2k. So I basically gave up.

Let me know as well if you get it to work with win xp/2k.

Dummy drivers for 2K / XP are not yet realesed. So all Sniffer Univesity classes using dummy drivers are still installed on NT.

In order to run the dummy driver you need to install first the MS loopback adapter in NT and then just install the dummy drivers like any other physical network adapter by pointing NT ot the right dir with the files.

Be carefull with copying the files because some DLL's are hidden files.

Robert:

I got a NT machine and installed the loopback adapter, but the process to install dummys is not clear for me, can you provide further instructions ? I need the E1, RS/V and Gigabit.

Thanks in advance !

I'll try, i don't have any sniffe or doc here with me at this time, but i do have a NT machine

- Make sure you have all the dummy driver files by showing also hidden files in your explorer options
- Install the MS loopback adaper
- Right click Network Neighborhood and choose properties
- choose the adapter tab and the option ADD
- Use the HAVE DISK option to browse to the dir were your dummy drives are
- Choose the driver you need (e.g. lm2000 for WAN)
- install lik any other driver
- In the TCP/IP tab give the virtual NIC an IP adres or disable al bindings exept Sniffer Protocol Driver in the bindings tab

When you are rady installing al virtual NIC' ta you need, reboot the machine and tat should do the trick.

One remark, depeding on you license, sniffer my decline a card. If you have a license for example only Ethernet, Sniffer will promt you that you are not allowed to use the WAN card.
Further the dummy drivers will not give you any possibility to capture traffic. The main purpose for these drivers is education by Sniffer University.

Hope all this helps you out.

Hi,
one thing to clarify.
These Dummy drivers are not official!.
They have been used for training purposes, but they haven't been released by Network Associates as part of the product. So there is no way we can claim them in the future.

These Dummy drivers exist for Portable 4.5 and for 4.7. They work on NT platform only.
Dummy drivers don't require the MS Loopback adapter. And they are installed like a normal NIC.
And as Robert already stated, they only work if your License supports this specific topology.

Matthias and Robert:

Many thanks for your advice, the installation is for demonstration pourposes only and now the "dummy" LM2000 is workin fine over Sniffer 4.7, we show the advantages of Sniifer portable, Snifferbook ( using LM2000 for showing Frame Rwelay, PPP, HDLC etc. features ) reproducing WAN captures.

Thanks all for your help !!!
