After 2 and a bit years of using CV, I realised that we weren't doing the whole export / import things properly - mainly because we hadn't configured our tape library to know it's mail slots.

Once we spent the 5 seconds to enable that, we have the luxury of tapes reliably being detected (no more forcing full scans) and them moving to the front slots after an export.

Where we still think we are doing things the wrong way is our 'due back' process. Right now, we have a scratch pool report running each morning to our offsite storage people. If they see any tapes in the report showing their location, they bring it back.

We can see in other areas that the 'due back' dates is listed and feel that this is really what we should be using, but how do we get to use this info other than buying VT enterprise?

By creating a Media Information Report! Check Spare Media outside the library!

While it's not the predictive report that I thought someone might post a way for running, that's certainly a cleaner and more deliberate way to achieve what we're doing now - without the tape people needing to know how to interpret the report.

Thanks!

Do you have a separate storage policy for your Offsites?

If you did, you could probably just run a Data Retention Forecast and Compliance report, leave both View Selection options unchecked, change Retention Status to Now, and sort by Storage Policy, and point it to your Offsite Storage Policy.

You get a non magnetic media summary which will list the estimated aging date for your media, unfortunately, you would still have to import the info into excel or something so that you could sort by Aging Data rather than Barcode.
