Hi, a newbie here,
I have been trying to get a couple of simple file servers up and running. I ordered some dual AMD processor boxes. I like SuSE, so I am using SuSE 8.1 Pro.
I started with some CNET ProG-2000 cards. They would work for about 10 seconds into a file transfer (testing large transfers). Then the machine would lock up tight...no keyboard etc. Would have to power down. I looked in the logs, and nothing.
So I decided it must be poor drivers or a compatibility issue, so I ordered some Intel PRO1000 MT dual port server NICs. The same thing, only they would lock as soon as I tried to bring an interface up...Linux wouldn't even get to save the configuration.
SuSE automatically loaded 2.4.19-64GB-SMP for a kernel. I pulled out one of the processors, and reloaded Linux. Of course it loaded with a standard single processor kernel. I loaded the drivers for the above mentioned cards, and they work great.
It must be something to do the the SMP kernel? How would I get around this? I would like to keep the 2nd processor in the box if possible. Any suggestions? Is their a problem getting the source / kernel versions matched up? I forgot to mention that after compiling the drivers for the SMP kernel, I got kernel mismatch message when insmod tried to work it's magic... I changed the Makefile as instructed to be sure I was using the right source...(or so I thought...how can I tell).
Thanks for any help!
