I just recently bought an ATI Radeon 9800 pro aiw,, and I want to implement an dual monitor setup. My vid card doesnt support this, but I was wondering if I bought another pci vid card if I would be able to do it. Or if that doesnt work, if there is another way to do it..

My specs are:

Windows XP pro
P4 2.4 ghz
Asus p4c-800 deluxe with 800 mhz FSB
2 x 512mb ddr 400 ram(in dual channel mode)
ATI Radeon 9800 pro aiw with 128mb memory (AGP 8x)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yes, 2 monitors is great. It's relatively easy task.

I've done it with 98s and XP was even easier to get it configured.

There are issues about a PCI/AGP combination about making the PCI video card the primary IN THE BIOS. (not in the display properties where you set you #1 and #2 monitor and their physical arrangement, after you boot up for the first time)

There's good info and instructions about this in XP help... start/help/index/multiple monitors.

ON my computer, the only settings under display in the system setup were for AGP or AUTO, so I set it to auto and it came right up after boot up. It was my 3rd because my AGP card has dual outputs, one dv and one VGA.

You just can't have enough monitors !!!

ps.....if I remember correctly, the PCI card didn't work until I made the setting 'in the bios', that's how I discovered that little jewel

I have struggled with the same problem with dual monitors. I still have the problem that when both video cards are enabled it locks my video input to my Rage Fury Pro card. I cannot capture video. Have any suggestions on what to set with this problem?

GMM;
are Both cards assigned to the same IRQ?
Is 1 card AGP and 1 PCI?
start > run > MSinfo32
left pane - HARDWARE > look / paste
IRQ Assignments and
Conflicts/Sharing and
Forced Hardware
click anywhere in RIGHT pane when there and Edit > Select all - Edit > Copy and Paste . Do this for each

Thanks for your response. The ATI card is AGP and nVidia is PCI.
There is a same IRQ associated with the ATI card:
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Controller.
But I cannot change the IRQ address for the card by the right click. And in Device manager the "Use Auto Settings" is greyed and I cannot change settings. Is there another way to change the IRQ for the card?

Hi GMM;
Listen - do you want to tear your system apart over this?

I have a couple of suggestions to try......but obviously it can get hairy.
Also your System specs are necassary...OS, Mobo, Chipset, CPU, etc
WIN98 does support dual monitors but not too easily....especially it must be a 440BX chipset or better or forget it.

Some more info;
From what I know - a lot of the graphic cards at that time used the AGP Bridge Acceleration technique to enhance the graphics, allow DVDROM playback, yet they were still PCI slot cards (essentially it ties up the AGP port and the CPUs direct access for high speed tranfers).
Basically - if you see things like this in MSinfo32 under Hardware Comp. > Memory
x2E000000 - x2F0FFFFF
Intel 82443BX Pentium(r) II Processor to AGP controller
xF8000000 - xFBFFFFFF
Intel 82443BX Pentium(r) II Processor to PCI bridge (with GART support)
you're CPU is prolly trying to use the AGP controller to accelerate the PCI nVidia card....when doubly hooked up

Also in the BIOS - is PCI selected as "Default Primary Video Adapter?" or is it set to AGP?

Also the USB COntroller on IRQ 9 is normal, but the Video is usually on 11....depending
To sort out the mess will take reconfiguring the IRQs and like I said it can get messy.
Got all your data Backed Up?

Man what a nightmarrish way to capture video. I did just about everything and more from your list of todos. In WinXP and ATI it just about is impossible to get Video-In and use Dual Monitors. So I did the chicken way out and purchased anATI-TV-Wonder-Pro PCI card and it works great. Your input at least taught me more than 15 techs at Comp-USA, Media Center, and many various other sellers could tell me. Because they had no clue. All of them told me astoundingly "Yes, it will work with no problems". What a crock they don't know.
Again thanks a million.

Glad you seeing DOUBLE finally....[pipe]
