1. Does anyone know if it is possible to do a dual boot using Windows XP (on primary partition) and Red Hat Linux 7.2 (on secondary partition) and any tutorials on doing so? I was told that installing Linux would overwrite the Master Boot Records making windows XP un-usable.

2. I am a beginner to Linux and would like to know if any of you can point me to a tutorial on learning some basic/common Linux commands and functions.

3. Also, I have been able to install apache on Linux, but would like to know how to set up FTP capabilities.

If anyone can help me with any of these three queries, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank You

1. Yes, you can dual boot XP and RH. Install XP first, and then RH second. RH will load a bootloader (GRUB or LILO, whichever you want) that will give you a menu that asks which OS you want to boot into. You want the bootloader to overwrite the MBR.

2. You can do a google search and find tons of Linux tutorials. Here's one of many that a Google search just turned up for me -->
3. For FTP, I would recommend installing ProFTPd --> They have sample files on the website. ProFTPd uses the same directives as Apache, so if you know Apache already, then you can figure out ProFTPd.

Thank You fluid11.

I just want to make sure that I understand you for question #3. If I have Apache installed on my machine and i want to have FTP access to my web files i have to install another application that will make my machine an FTP server. Isn't their an option in apache to set up ftp access? I'm not looking forward to installing additional applications unless i have no other choice. i know when u use IIS on windows, you can set up FTP capabilities without needeing to install an FTP server. is this possible with apache?

You need to go to and download it. You may have already installed Wu-FTPd during the RH installation, so you can use that instead if you want. I prefer ProFTPd, and never use Wu-FTPd.
