I'm running XP Pro (including SP 3) on a 62GB partition of a 250GB drive and would like to clean-install XP Pro on the second partition of 170GB. My goal is to retain everything now running on the smaller partition, gradually reinstall desired programs on the second partition, and selectively copy data files to an external drive, then move them to the second partition. Getting that second copy of XP set up on the second partition is the first step, so I would like to hear from anybody who thinks this is not feasible, as well as from anybody who has done this and can point to a very specific step-by-step procedure. Many thanks.

If the Partition is physically created then there's really no mystery of difficulty to it. Just pop the Windows XP Cd in, and restart your PC, the Machine should boot up with the CD and Start the install, just point it to the partition you wish to use, and let it go. It will create a boot loader that will allow you to choose which instance of XP to boot into.

The only real thing to be aware of is to make sure you choose the correct partition to install into, and if you want to preserve anything on that partition, do not choose to format it.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

I second what Vacunita has said, it is just as simple as installing for the first time...

things to look out for, where already mentioned:

1. right partition
2. not to format if there is still data that you want...
and
3. if the partition has no data, then do format it (QUICK)...

How to create a multiple-boot system in Windows XP

then:

the BOOT.INI file, on the original install, will contain the information on the various XP installs, the first one listed will be the OLD install...

You can edit this file with notepad, to give them distinct names, e.g. OLD XP and NEW XP etc...
