My desire is to end up with a dual boot system with my current NT and an XP upgrade of my current NT in diffent partitions. I have a 2 drive system. One drive is my run drive and the other it's backup. I can zap the backup drive and use if for experiments, for now. Eventually I want to get back to where I am now, with a run drive and it's backup. Any suggestions on a path to accomplish this dual boot, XP upgrade ? Will I end up with registry confusion on the location of program files when I run using the upgraded XP now in a different partition ?

HOW TO: Create a Multiple-Boot System in Windows XP (Q306559)

NT will upgrade to Pro but not Home. It will only upgrade over the current NT installation. A better option might be to use the upgrade CD to clean install Pro (using any NT CD as a qualifying Product when asked for during the Pro Setup).

Each install will be completely separate and accessed via a Boot Options screen.

To keep it separate, use partition magic. and the boot magic that goes with it. The NT will install in separate partitions with no problem and the upgrade will happen on the one you choose. But best to set your upgrade install partition manually , then reactivate the boot manager.
