I need to install XP Pro on a Win 98 machine. I have partitioned my 10gb hard disk using Partition Magic, the second partition is NTFS but it doesn't show as a new drive letter...I still have only a c:.

I know it's important not to install Win 98 after an XP installation, I'm doing it the other way around so I should be ok. What is the best way of going about installing XP Pro. Should I choose the clean installation and hope that it recognises the second partition?.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm only installing XP Pro for testing of software compatibility so I need a dual boot.

Rgds,
Niall

Hi,

Win 98 will not display any NTFS partition, if you wish to see the XP partition you will have to fdisk/format it to FAT32, personally I have left all partitions on my computer as FAT32 as I don't think there is any great benefit to using NTFS unless you are really concerned with security.

You can proceed with the installation of XP as your system stands, just pop the CD in, re-boot the computer, boot from CD and the installation program will start, when asked where you would like to install XP just select the appropriate partition. XP will create a boot menu for you when installation is finished so you can boot to XP or 98 at startup.
