My system is dual boot: 98SE and XP. In addition to these choices in the Boot Menu there is second listing of XP. How do I remove the errant listing from the list of choices?

Many Thanks!

In windows xp.
Enable " show hidden files and folders"
(explorer -tools-folder options - view )

Locate c:\boot.ini
Right click it , select properties ,clear the read only mark.

OPen notepad.
open the file c:\boot.ini
edit the strings (add the bold char):

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(?)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 1" /fastdetect

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(?)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 2" /fastdetect

Now boot several times and test nr.1 and nr.2 write down the one that works.
In windows xp edit the file again and delete the line that did nor work.

Assuming that your default operating system is one of the XP's.

Right-click My Computer icon/ Advanced/ Start up and Recovery - Settings/ System Startup - Edit

Remove the XP that is NOT the Default listing. The Default is listed in the Boot.ini as default operating system (and also in the box above the Edit button).

With the sincerity of a thousand monks...... I thank you both! Quick and painless. All done.
