hi all, i recently reformated my compaq 1800t laptop for a dual boot with rh 8.0 and win xp. so far i set up 100MB boot partition, rh partition, and the rest is left unformatted for an xp partition. ive already installed rh and have it running great. my question is that when i install xp, should i worry about xp screwing up my boot loader? im currently using grub, and want it to stay that way.

xp most likely will screw up your bootloader by using it's own. The normal installation order would be to install XP first then RH.

hmm...that figures. well, if i make a boot disk and boot into rh, can i setup grub again after the xp install? i suppose i could redo everythin too but i have a lot of stuff configured already and hate to have to go back through it again.

Booting from a bootdisk and running [tt]grub-install <harddrive device>[/tt] would reinstall GRUB in the MBR. //Daniel

hmm...well it seems that the grub install isnt quite as easy as i thought. could someone give me a breif discription of how to go about it? i found the /sbin/grub file, but i keep getting

Error 12: Invalid device requested

ive specified hd0 and /boot but thats not working. what are the stage1 and stage2 parameters? do i need to specify config files etc? thanks

You should run [tt]/sbin/grub-install[/tt]. That is the program that re-installs grub into the MBR. //Daniel

ahh...i see. thanks daniel. for the noobies out there like me, there is a seperate file /sbin/grub-install. i ran /sbin/grub --install. id die without you tek-tippers! :)
