Dear All,

I have bought a copy of Fedora Core 4 and want to dual boot it with Windows 2000. I am already using Win2K and have an 80 gig hard drive partitioned into 3 drives (45 gig /20 gig /15 gig).

Is it possible to install Linux on the 3rd 15 gig partition and dual boot it with win2k? I don’t really want to do a new install of win2k.

Where? Fedora is [blue]for free.[/blue]

Yes, it is possible. Boot your PC with the first linux CD (the installer) and when you get the partition screen just play with the las partition. The install utility will *see* your existing windows OS and going to create the options in your lilo/grub.

Cheers.

YLook for the bootloader question. If you answer yes, it should configure lilo or grub for you. To change the default boot sequence, for lilo (linux loader), edit the /etc/lilo.conf file and change the defaults. Run lilo (or maybe "/sbin/lilo" not sure on FC4) at the command line to active the changes.

Should you ever find yourself in a position where the bootloader does not work, find a boot disk from win98 or something and boot to the command prompt with it, type "fdisk /mbr" to remove the linux bootloader.

Going throught the install you will be asked to partition the drive. You will need to add 1 more partition for swap. You can take that 3rd partition and split that into 2. 1 Being about twice the size of the a amount of ram that you have and the rest for the core install.

Fedora will install and you should install on the MBR (Master Boot Record) the grub loader. You will be presented a choice of which os that you want to boot into. The default is set for Fedora but you can change it during the install or edit the /etc/grub.conf and change the default number from 0 to 1. That should mean change from Fedora, the first OS Listed to the 2nd which should be XP.

Thats it.
